-Some surprising news from our beloved football squad, Dallas Baker has been released and defensive back Roy Lewis has been signed to the active roster. You knew that with both Bryant McFadden and Deshea Townsend on the shelf this week due to injury that some move was coming, but just a couple weeks after Baker was playing as the third receiver, he's not even on the roster anymore. To me, this says two things, that the Steelers are confident Santonio has his head screwed on straight permanently, and that Limas Sweed, after some early issues with picking up the playbook, has matured quickly into a good enough receiver to be on the field in 4 and 5 receiver sets.
-William Gay will get his first career start tomorrow, a somewhat startling revelation. Although Gay has played very well this season, it wasn't that long ago this guy was a complete unknown as a fifth round rookie a year ago. For all the criticism that the Steelers have received for some questionable draft picks, the 07 draft continues to look like a gem. Woodley could be a Pro Bowler this season, Timmons will be a force when the Steelers finally take Larry Foote out back and put him out of his misery, Matt Spaeth is the second coming of Mark Bruener, Darnell Stapleton (who was an undrafted free agent) looks like a real steal of a transaction, and Gay, at worst, looks like a very capable nickel/ dime back, and we will get a glimpse of how he could fair as a starter for the long-term tomorrow.
-Next Saturday will be the sight of one of the all-time great Western PA traditions: The WPIAL Football Championships. And I will be there, though probably won't be able to rouse myself awake in time for the A game. I don't have a specific link here, as the full coverage won't be in the PG until probably Thursday or Friday, but it's worth checking out the local papers for the matchups which will be: A: Monaca vs. Clairton; AA: Aliquippa vs. Beaver Falls; AAA: Thomas Jefferson vs. Blackhawk; AAAA: Bethel Park vs. Gateway.
-Hooray! Dan Rooney will hang on to the Steelers it seems for the very reasonable sum of $800 million. My question is, how in the hell did Dan Rooney come up with that much money? Especially in a financial crisis like we are in now where banks don't even want to give each other money, let alone an outsider trying to buy a sports team's majority share?
-Here's a little look at the Pirates off-season possibilities, courtesy of the World Wide Leader. At some point in the near future, I'm going to look at some buy-low type free agents the Pirates may be interested in this offseason, and the folks at the Trib put together their own list toward the bottom of this article.
-If you are Pitt Panthers football fan and you aren't reading Paul Zeise's daily Q&A on the team, then I just don't know what to tell you. Note that this is just today's Q&A, which was actually a sort of weak entry, but this is where the most in-depth coverage of the team comes from, as he is actually permitted to give his opinions and thoughts in this forum, instead of his usual work as a straight-new beat writer.
Okay that's all I can muster up right now. I apologize if this is kind of a weak entry, in the future, I will more actively collect links at the week goes along instead of compiling them all at once
